Preschool instructors appear to lack the knowledge, skills and confidence to effectively teach their young students science – a problem that is likely contributing to America’s poor global performance in this crucially important subject. A  first-of-its-kind study  by Michigan State University researchers found that early childhood educators’ self-reported ability and enjoyment was high for literacy, but much lower for science and math. Further, while 99 percent of preschool teachers engaged in literacy instruction three to four times a week, that figure fell to 75 percent in math and only 42 percent in science. Michigan State University has launched a new effort to improve K-12 education for students in the state and nation by delivering objective, timely research findings directly to decision makers. The Education Policy Innovation Collaborative, or EPIC, is focused on building partnerships between researchers and state and school district leaders. EPIC researchers use pioneering data analysis to inform policies related to teacher quality, school turnaround and improvement, school choice, and other key issues at stake in schools and communities. The National Universities Commission (NUC) has ruled that henceforth, degrees obtained online from any institution outside the country, “will not be recognised as a means of seeking employment or doing other legitimate business in Nigeria.” According to Punch , the commission’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Ibrahim Usman Yakasai , said: “Nigeria will not recognise online degrees. Online degrees are not accepted in Nigeria at the moment; the Nigerian constitution does not even give recognition to such degrees. Those who ran out of Nigeria for study outside this country are those looking for cheaper degrees.
